Common Ethical Issues for SLPs and Audiologists working in Health Care Settings

Course Description: Speech language pathologists and audiologists working in hospitals and medical settings must contend with a unique set of ethical issues. Improper billing, documentation lapses and breaches of confidentiality can harm patients and create liability. Additionally, disagreements regarding hospital policies or patient care can lead to ethical violations if they are not handled properly.   During this one hour presentation, we will discuss the ethical challenges that SLP and audiologists frequently face and provide recommendations regarding how to properly navigate them.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Identify situations that may lead to breaches of confidentiality, documentation lapses and billing issues.
  2. Summarize how to address situations where the ASHA Code of Ethics may conflict with an employer’s policy or mandate.
  3. Describe the process SLPs and audiologists should follow when leaving a job, addressing a conflict of interest, or obtaining informed consent.
