Course Description

This one-day workshop will focus primarily on speech sound disorders (SSDs) in children from three different special clinical populations: (1) older children with persistent speech errors, (2) children with hearing impairment who have been fitted with cochlear implants, and (3) children with cleft lip and palate. It will include discussion of assessment but will primarily focus on intervention. Topic areas to be addressed will include:

  • Why traditional approaches often don’t work with older children with speech errors
  • Non-instrumental alternatives to the traditional approach
  • Instrumental alternatives to the traditional approach
  • Intervention targets for children with cochlear implants
  • Treatment options for children with cochlear implants
  • The nature of speech sound errors in children with cleft palate
  • Perceptual, articulatory, and phonological approaches in cleft palate
