The Genetic Basis of Isolated Deafness

Abstract:
In this session you will learn to construct a pedigree to recognize patterns of deafness in families.  Based on the pattern of inheritance you will understand family members' chances to have a child who is hearing or deaf.  Genetic testing options will be discussed with a focus on connexin 26, testing paneling, and research studies.

Learning Objectives:
Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:

  1. Construct a basic 3-generation pedigree with standard symbols
  2. Recognize examples of autosomal recessive, autosomal dominant, and X-linked List recurrence risks for each form of inheritance
  3. Recognize the possible benefits and drawbacks of genetic testing.
