Response to Intervention and Patterns of Strengths and Weaknesses: The Speech Pathologist’s New Role on School Literacy Teams

James B. Hanson, M.Ed.

Abstract:
The presentation will describe the process of Response to Intervention, the changes in the identification of specific learning disabilities (SLD) based on federal law, and the changing role of the speech language pathologist in assessment and intervention. Practical, real-life examples will be used. We will also cover the application of RTI to the identification of and intervention with communication disorders. This might clear up some confusion between RTI and other methods of assessment (e.g., dynamic assessment). Finally, Jim will compare and contrast the old method of identification of SLD-the IQ/Achievement discrepancy model-with the two new methods (RTI and PSW). We will discuss the opportunities and challenges of the new models, and we will discuss how school teams can and must work together to increase student literacy.
