Language Assessment and Intervention for Bilingual Children

Abstract:
The purpose of this presentation is to provide information on bilingual language development and disorders in English language learners, particularly those from Latino backgrounds.  Topics will include: socio-cultural and socio-linguistic aspects of language acquisition; barriers to service delivery; myths ands facts about bilingualism; bilingual language development; language in the classroom; and appropriate assessment and intervention approaches.

Learning Objectives:
As a result of this seminar, the participant will:
  1. Understand socio-cultural factors related to bilingual language acquisition.
  2. Understand bilingual language development.
  3. Become acquainted with best practice principles for assessment and intervention.
  4. Become familiar with cross-linguistic and bilingual approaches to intervention

Brian Goldstein, Ph.D., CCC-SLP is an Associate Professor in the Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders at Temple University.  Dr. Goldstein is the author of Cultural and Linguistic Diversity Resource Guide for Speech-Language Pathologists, the editor of Bilingual Language Development and Disorders in Spanish-English Speakers, and was the Editor of Language, Speech, and Hearing Services in the Schools (2004-2006). He is a Fellow of ASHA.
