Abstract:
This presentation will concentrate on some of the major degenerative neurological disorders seen by speech-language pathologists. For each disorder, the discussion will include basic information on the cause of the condition and suggestions on the treatment of relevant speech, language, and swallowing disorders. The following disorders will be covered:
A. Huntington's Disease
B. Multiple Sclerosis
C. Myasthenia Gravis
D. Guillain-Barre Syndrome
Learning Objectives:
1. The participant will be able to describe the causes of these major degenerative neurological conditions.
2. The participant will be able to describe appropriate speech treatments for these major degenerative neurological conditions.
3. The participant will be able to describe the appropriate language treatments for these major degenerative neurological conditions.
4. The participant will be able to describe the appropriate swallowing treatments for these major degenerative neurological conditions.
Biosketch:
Don Freed, Ph.D., is the Chair of the Department of Communicative Disorders and Deaf Studies at California State University, Fresno. He worked as a speech pathologist in acute care and rehabilitation facilities, as well as a research speech pathologist at the VA Medical Center in Portland, Oregon. Most of his research has concentrated on word-finding problems associated with aphasia.
