3/3/08 OSHA Fall Conference Update

Your program committee has been working hard to engage some great speakers for this fall’s conference.  We’ll be at the new Salem Convention Center this year, and the conference will take place October 10th and 11th.  Our speakers this year include Betsy Crais of the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill, who will discuss language intervention with infants and toddlers; Brian Goldstein from Temple University, who will discuss phonological disorders in culturally and linguistically diverse populations; and Michelle G. Winner, discussing social communication.  For those of you who work with adults, we are in the process of putting together a full program, presented by Oregon VA alums!

In this newsletter, you’ll find the call for papers.  If you have something you’d like to share with your colleagues from across the state, please consider submitting a presentation.  If you have any questions about the submissions process, please do not hesitate to contact us by phone or mail.  So, please send in those submissions and we look forward to seeing you in Salem this fall!

"Thanks to everyone who joined us for the fall [2007] conference in Eugene.  Attendees were able to choose from many different topics, including phonological processes, voice and swallowing, preschool literacy, and evidence-based practice.  Feedback was generally quite favorable.  Attendees were impressed with the range of presentations available, the quality of the speakers and the presentations and the overall organization of the conference.

A number of attendees commented on the lack of mid-morning and afternoon snacks and sodas.  We agree that it would be wonderful to be able to offer snacks and drinks throughout the day, but with each day’s breakfast and lunch costs in excess of $15,000, it just isn’t financially feasible.

We also continue to struggle with handouts and some people did not leave with handouts for every presentation they attended.  We always make a large number of extra handouts for each session and have a copy machine available at the conference.  If we have permission from a speaker, we put handouts on our website. In spite of these concerns, we had a very successful conference, and most attendees felt that they took useful knowledge back to work.
